Roberto Calò

Roberto Calò was born in Palermo in 1985. A young artist with a striking style and technique, Calò has exhibited across Italy and in Portugal since he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara in 2012. Focusing on portraiture, he is carving out his own place within the genre.

Calò’s oil on canvas portraits are simultaneously disconcerting and alluring. While the influence of past great masters can be detected, Calò’s use of angle, light and colour is unique. The Latin concept of light is two-part: ‘lumen’ the physical illumination and ‘lux’ the metaphysical light of the soul. Calò investigates and reveals these elements, creating works in which the light of matter and spirit are brought together in fascinating luminosity.
