Giuliano Macca was born in Noto, Sicily in 1988 and is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
His first experimentations were in the world of street art but in 2016 he was commissioned to create the sets for a play at the Eliseo Theatre in Rome. Soon after, he presented a performance work at the MAAM, the Museum of the Other and the Elsewhere, curated by the Rome museum’s founder, Giorgio de Finis, while in 2017 he took part in a group show at the prestigious Scuderie Aldobrandini in Frascati. His solo show a year later at the Mirabilia gallery in Rome sold out within minutes of opening.
Macca’s preferred medium is oil, both on canvas and paper. His latest, startling works are in the portrait tradition, celebrating the psychological component of the genre. The artist evokes a hidden and emotional world, employing his trademark double images and multiple eyes to explore the complexity of identity and its co-existing, often contradictory elements. The final effect heightens the solitude and pathos of his subjects.
